Why Goodluck Jonathan should not contest in 2027 — Shehu Sani

A former Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has advised ex-President Goodluck Jonathan against contesting the 2027 presidential election, warning that the political landscape has changed drastically. Speculations about Jonathans possible return have continued to grow within political circles, especially amid debates over a one-term Southern presidency and the emergence of a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking on Channels Television, Sani argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which Jonathan used to secure victory in 2011, has become fragmented and weakened. Each time there is an election, the name of Jonathan comes up. It is his choice to contest, but I advise him not to. The reason is simple: the PDP he used to know is not the PDP of today. The PDP in the South-West is endorsing the president, while some members have joined the coalition. It is not the same party, so he shouldnt waste his time, Sani said. He also dismissed the strength of the emerging coalition, stating that its members lack ideological depth and are not significantly different from President Bola Tinubus political philosophy. We are in a democracy, and it is within the right of our democratic experiment to have an opposition that offers alternatives. But if their only mission is to remove Tinubu without providing any alternative to governance or his style, then they have no agenda. The people that make up the coalition today are not ideologically or philosophically different from the policies the Tinubu administration is pursuing. Its not like we have a Marxist versus a Capitalist, or a Neo-Liberal versus a Conservative.
